I was wondering what would be my next blog post will be...
When all of a sudden, I remember...
Last November 7, 2012, that was also Wednesday...I attended a discussion entitled Disaster Preparedness.
Well, from the title of the discussion itself, the talk was mainly about being prepared in any course of disaster.
Disaster, as defined by World Health Organization, is an occurrence disrupting the normal conditions of existence and causing a level of suffering that exceeds the capacity of adjustment of the affected community.
In simplier words, what matter most are the lives of the people, and without the people, we have no disaster. It is also said that disaster is not an unusual phenomena because it is just the reflection; the reflection of the ways society structure them and allocate their resources.
Every year Western countries specifically United States of America spends $100B to subsidize the power stations, the root of global warming; $300B to subsidize agriculture, for deforestation and overgrazing; and $50B to subsidize fisheries which are almost used up.
Furthermore, disaster happen when hazards and vulnerability meet. Because susceptible stuff like poverty that results to limited access to power structures and resources; the economic systems; and illness and disabilities would be fully distrupted if a triggering event happen like earthquake, floods, etc.
That is why it is important for everybody to engage in doing preparation, preparedness, because it is themeasures that ensures the mobilization of funds, personnel, supplies and equipment for an effective relief.
I guess having one of the basic needs, food, is the easiest thing for any starter. According to a blog, Doomsday Preppers GUIDE here are just a few suggestions:
* Dried green split peas. (Grains such as peas and dried beans are a good and natural source of proteins. Vegetarians use it as an alternative option to meat products, which during a lack of power supply will become almost impossible to keep in stock)
* Canned meat products. (Been in the middle of a crisis don't necessarily means depriving yourself and your family from eating kind of the way you normally will, and canned meats can provide a sense of normality. Check expiration dates on your preferable canned meat products. You will be surprised to find "Good until open" Spam is one of those perfect items)
* Macaroni and cheese. (Just another example of a long lasting food product high on calories)
* Dried eggs.
Well, I believe that everyone can do some little preparation for any devastating incident.
Remember, just by staying aware of things that are happening around us would be of help to ALL of US.
